Tuomaala
earned Bachelors degrees in horn performance and music education from
Bowling
Green State University and a Masters degree in Music Education from the
University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied
conducting with Dr. Terrance Milligan.
While in
Cincinnati he founded the Cincinnati Chamber Arts Ensemble and served
as
assistant conductor for the Clermont Philharmonic, Blue Ash Symphony
Orchestra,
Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony and Chorale, and the Miami Valley Youth
Orchestra.
He also studied conducting at the Conductors Retreat at Medomak,
Conductors Guild Workshops, USAF Heartland of America Band Conducting
Seminar, and the Elba Conductors Training Program in Italy.
Currently he works at St. Cloud State University where he is Director
of the new Husky Sports Band
in addition to marketing and recruitment for the Department of Music. His previous
teaching positions include Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan), Marygrove
College (Detroit,
Michigan), the College of Mount St. Joseph (Cincinnati, Ohio), and
Alma College (Alma,
Michigan).
Having
written reviews of new music literature and was a regular
columnist for Band & Orchestra News, School Band and Orchestra,
Drum Corps World, and
schoolmusic.com. He has also served as a clinician for music
conferences and workshops at the University of
Dayton and the University of Delaware.
An advocate for arts education, he has
taught music K-12 in both private and public schools earning
recognition with the 1997
Most Promising Teacher Award from Purcell Marian High
School and national
recognition with a Melody
Grant Award from the Mr. Holland’s Opus
Foundation in 1999.
